Baseball: Alemany advances to VIBL quarterfinals with shutout

Mission Hills Alemany received five shutout innings from Cody Thompson and two shutout innings of relief from Peter Van Gansen in a 5-0 victory over Encino Crespi in a second-round game of the VIBL playoffs.

Ryan Paramo had a two-run double. Alemany advances to Monday’s quarterfinals against Royal in the single-elimination tournament. Royal defeated Cleveland, 5-3, with Atherton Kniseley hitting a solo home run and two-run home run.

Justin Russell threw a complete game and Hayden Rappoport had four hits in El Camino Real’s 11-3 win over Birmingham. Harvard-Westlake rallied for a 5-2 win over Hart. Alex Horowitz went two for three and contributed a game-winning RBI triple in the fourth.

Harvard-Westlake will host Simi Valley in the quarterfinals. The Pioneers defeated Kennedy, 13-2. Sophomore-to-be Matt Campbell threw two shutout innings and had two hits. Junior Mykel Davis had three hits.

Chatsworth defeated Calabasas, 6-0.

Top-seeded West Ranch defeated Agoura, 6-5, in nine innings. After a 1-1 deadlock, Agoura scored four runs in the top of the ninth and West Ranch came back with five runs in the bottom of the ninth. Justin Holvis had the game-winning two-run single.
