On Sundays this summer, I’m presenting my favorite videos from those I’ve shot over the last three years and telling the back story.

In 2009, I went to find out how the basketball coach at La Mirada, Larry Kaupang, could do his job while teaching elementary school, and I also met a player named Derrick Williams, who on Thursday could be the No. 1 or No. 2 player taken in the NBA draft.

From the video, you get a feel for the versatility of Coach Kaupang, who also makes it clear what a special player Williams is. That’s something the rest of Southern California and the nation wouldn’t find out until Williams became a standout at Arizona.
