Sundays with Sondheimer: Elementary school teacher and Derrick Williams

On Sundays this summer, I'm presenting my favorite videos from those I've shot over the last three years and telling the back story.

In 2009, I went to find out how the basketball coach at La Mirada, Larry Kaupang, could do his job while teaching elementary school, and I also met a player named Derrick Williams, who on Thursday could be the No. 1 or No. 2 player taken in the NBA draft.

From the video, you get a feel for the versatility of Coach Kaupang, who also makes it clear what a special player Williams is. That's something the rest of Southern California and the nation wouldn't find out until Williams became a standout at Arizona.

Good journalism, Eric, as coaches are foremost teachers and

mentors. They also teach morals and ethics in playing sports, on

and off the field...Wayne Kurtz.
