The Southern Section will revise how it places teams in boys’ and girls’ basketball playoff divisions next season to help put the section closer to state playoff divisions.

Teams will be placed based on a combination of their school enrollment, plus how they have done over the last four years with a weighted point system, placing more emphasis on their most recent seasons. This is the way it has been done in recent years, but the weighted system is different.

One big change is that schools under 1,250 enrollment will start out in Divisions 4, 5 and 6. All other schools will be in Divisions 1, 2 and 3. Then schools will be moved up or down based on their most recent four-year profile.

The Southern Section will create an extra division in 3, having 3A, 3AA and 3AAA championships while going to only one division in 6.

The division alignments won’t be finalized until CBEST enrollment figures come out in late October.
