George Farmer of Gardena Serra, one of the top sprinters in the state, scratched from the 100 and 200 at Saturday’s Southern Section Division 4 track prelims at Carpinteria after an ankle injury suffered earlier in the week got worse while warming up.

The loss of Farmer leaves a big void at next week’s Southern Section finals. The USC-bound Farmer finished second in the state in last year’s 100 final. Already missing from the 100 is the City Section’s top sprinter, Crenshaw’s De’Anthony Thomas, who decided not to compete this spring while focusing on academics.

Covina’s Remontay McClain ran a wind-aided 10.28 to win his heat of the 100 at the Division 3 prelims at Estancia. He also qualified in the 200.
