Never before has Los Angeles Loyola had a track performer compete in three grueling distance individual events, plus a relay. But that’s what Elias Gedyon intends to do at Saturday’s Southern Section-Ford presented by Farmers track and field championships at Cerritos College.

He qualified at Saturday’s Division 2 prelims in the 800, 1,600, 3,200 and 1,600-meter relay. He’s the key athlete as Loyola tries to knock off Santa Ana Mater Dei and Newport Harbor to win a fourth consecutive track championship.

‘We recognized we’re in the hunt,’ distance coach Lalo Diaz said. ‘We approached him and he said, ‘Whatever it takes.’’

Gedyon, headed to Oregon, will be trying to score as many points as he can, which means next week’s finals will be much tougher than the prelims when all he was trying to do was qualify.
