The City Section Track & Field Championships are set to begin at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa.

It’s a hot but breezy day, meaning chances are slim that meet records will be broken because marks are more likely to be wind-aided.

Los Angeles Dorsey and Birmingham figure to battle it out for the boys’ title while Woodland Hills Taft, Carson and defending champion Palisades Birmingham are the favorites on the girls’ side.

Dorsey wide receiver Marvin Hall led all qualifiers in the 100-meter dash at last week’s prelims with a time of 10.93 seconds. Terrence Hall of Fairfax was second in 11.21.

Santee’s Omar Cortes was the top qualifier in the 1,600 at 4:23.78 and the 3,200 in 9:46.56 and Birmingham’s Chris Mitchell led qualifiers in the 400 at 48.94 and the 200 at 21.94 last week.

Lexis Lambert of Woodland Hills Taft was the top qualifier in the girls’ 100 at 12.25 and the 200 at 24.87.

Taft senior Laurie Henigan and Palisades sophomore Kendall Gustafson are set to face off in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Henigan won the 100 in 14.92 and the 300 hurdles in 44.79 at prelims. Gustafson is the defending 300 hurdles champion and was the third-fastest qualifier last week.

Field events are scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. and running events at 5:30 p.m.
