Baseball: Pallares throws two-hitter for Corona Santiago

The Southern Section baseball playoffs began Tuesday with wild-card games on fields that were dry, and Corona Santiago came away with an impressive 6-0 victory over Chaparral in a Division 1 opener.

Steven Pallares threw a two-hitter and Cody Bruder hit a home run. Santiago earns the right to play top-seeded Huntington Beach Edison on Friday at Edison. Santiago owns a win over No. 2-seeded Santa Ana Mater Dei this season.

Fountain Valley used the occasion to earn some respect for the Sunset League by defeating Bellflower St. John Bosco, 4-1, in a a Division 1 game. Simi Valley Royal defeated Villa Park, 4-2, for its 12th consecutive victory.

Taylor Martin threw three innings and Zack Milan finished up to get the victory and send Fountain Valley to a first-round game on Friday against Simi Valley.

Orange Lutheran defeated Rio Mesa, 16-3, with Nolan Rogers getting three RBIs.

In Division 2, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Lakewood Mayfair, 3-1. Kevin Meyers gave up one run in five innings of relief. Max Feske drove in two runs with two hits. Riverside La Sierra defeated Redlands East Valley, 5-3. Riley Mellentine and Ryan Villarreal each had two its. La Sierra will play Arcadia on Thursday in a first-round game.

In Division 4, Alec Cordoba had three hits and three RBIs in Chino’s 10-1 win over Palm Springs. Simi Valley Grace Brethren defeated Covina Northview, 3-0. Don Carlson allowed two hits in six innings.
