Golf: Jonathan Sanders shows he's a big-time player

May 16, 2011 |  6:00 pm

Jonathan Sanders attends tiny New Community Jewish High School in West Hills, but he has proven himself to be a big-time golfer. He's only a junior and has committed to Washington. On Monday, he led all qualifiers in the Northern Regional of the Southern Section individual championships with a one-under 70 at Las Posas Country Club.

The top 30 individuals qualify for next Monday's Southern Section individual finals at Industry Hills Golf Course. Thomas Lim of Moorpark finished with a 71.

Sanders is related to the late William Harmatz, a jockey who rode the winner in the 1959 Preakness Stakes. Sanders' mother is the neice of Harmatz.

In the Southern Regional, Kevin Lee of Cerritos shot a 68 to lead qualifiers at Skylinks Golf Course. Preston Valder of Anaheim Servite and Brian Campbell of Santa Ana Mater Dei shot 70.

Sophomore Rico Hoey of Rancho Cucamonga shot 67 at the Central Regional at Desert Willow Golf Course.
