Baseball: To publish stats or not?

There are a group of baseball coaches who decline to put their players’ statistics up on Maxpreps.com, saying they don’t want to help opposing teams after they spend valuable time scouting others. Others indicate they don’t have the time to type in the statistics.

I’ve had this argument with them that it’s their kids who lose out, with perhaps a college scout, professional scout or sportswriter not noticing something that might lead to a story, an observation or publicity for an athlete or program.

All four City Section Division I semifinalist teams have chosen not to put up individual player statistics on Maxpreps.

All four Southern Section Division 1 semifinalist teams have their statistics up.

You can make your own judgment on what it means. College and professional statistics are available for anybody who has a computer.

I think it hurts City Section athletes trying to get attention that their statistics aren’t easily available, but I’ve apparently lost that argument.
