Baseball: San Pedro beats Banning in 13 innings, 2-0

The pitchers were in charge during a Marine League showdown Tuesday between San Pedro and Wilmington Banning. Cesar Nava of San Pedro and Alan Velasco of Banning each threw 10 shutout innings before having to leave the game.

In the top of the 13th, San Pedro scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 13th, Banning put runners on second and third. Jonathan Hernandez sent a drive to the wall in right-center, but Blake Mendoza made a game-winning catch. The Pirates (20-6, 6-1) won, 2-0, to tie Banning (18-9, 6-1) for first place in the Marine League.

In the Mission League, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake defeated Loyola, 6-3. Casey Rosenfeld went two for two. Lucas Giolito struck out six in six innings. Connor Dillman got the save. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Encino Crespi, 4-1. Matt Lathuras limited Crespi to two hits. Nick Huynh had two hits. Mission Hills Alemany defeated St. Francis, 9-8. Chase Davis had three hits. Alemany had a 9-1 lead and needed Peter Van Gansen to come in for his eighth save.

In the Alph League, Van Nuys Montclair Prep fell two games behind first-place Lancaster Paraclete after losing to the Spirits, 9-6. Monclair Prep committed eight errors. Max Fried hit two home runs for the Mounties in defeat.

Santa Barbara (19-6, 10-1) clinched the Channel League title with a 2-1 over Ventura. Danny Zandona (8-1) struck out 12 and walked none.

Tesoro defeated La Palma Kennedy, 16-0. Braden Peters hit his fourth home run. Kris Paulino had three hits.

L.A. Cathedral defeated Bosco Tech, 10-0. Sergio Luna struck out 11, including 10 in a row. Gardena Serra defeated St. Bernard, 10-0.
