Baseball: Pettibone, Esperanza eliminates No. 2 Mater Dei

Austin Pettibone did something few pitchers have accomplished this season _ shut down Mater Dei's hitting attack. He led Anaheim Esperanza to a 5-1 win over No. 2-seeded Mater Dei in a Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinal game.

Esperanza will play Long Beach Wilson in Tuesday's semifinals. Wilsond defeated Simi Valley, 2-0. Chase DeJong threw a four-hitter.

In another upset brewing, Lakewood holds a 3-1 lead over Huntington Beach Edison and pitcher Henry Owens going into the seventh.

In Division 4, La Puente Bishop Amat advanced to the semifinals with a 13-2 win over Fontana Kaiser. A.J. Alcantara had six RBIs.
