The quarterfinals in the Southern Section baseball playoffs are all about star power, and Van Nuys Montclair Prep has its ace pitcher, Max Fried, ready to throw on Friday in a tough road game at Lompoc in the Division 5 quarterfinals.

Fried, a junior who has committed to UCLA, has been making an impact as a hitter in the postseason, but it’s his pitching that the Mounties rely on against top teams.

Thanks to No. 2 pitcher Nick Suniga throwing well, Montclair Prep has emerged as a title contender in DIvision 5, but these road games are real tests, whether because of weather, the mound, fan support or long bus rides.

But if Fried’s curveball is working and the Mounties can play defense, beware.
