When the City Section did a realignment of its baseball divisions this past season, it created opportunity for teams in Division II, and Lincoln High has taken advantage, reaching the semifinals for the first time since 1969.

The idea was to help programs gain some success and confidence. Lincoln knocked off Gardena, which plays in the tough Marine League, in the quarterfinals, and gets to face North Hollywood on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Birmingham for the right to play at Dodger Stadium on Saturday. The other semifinal has L.A. Wilson taking on South Gate at 3 p.m. at Birmingham.

David Soto, a senior pitcher, is 6-3 with a 1.86 ERA for Lincoln. Junior James Orozco is batting .381.

North Hollywood, once a Division I power, is slowly working its way back under Coach Hector Menchaca, a former North Hollywood infielder. The Huskies’ big weapon in the playoffs has been freshman pitcher Andrew Marmor, who threw seven shutout innings against University. He’s an A student who attends the school’s Highly Gifted Magnet.

Wilson is the highest seeded team left at No. 6. North Hollywood is No. 9, South Gate No. 10 and Lincoln No. 13.
