San Fernando didn’t like its City Section seeding at No. 6. The Tigers shared the Valley Mission League title with Granada Hills Kennedy and thought they deserved better.

Well, they’re in the City Section Division I semifinals on Wednesday at USC at 6 p.m. against defending champion Woodland Hills El Camino Real, a team they beat, 3-1, in their season opener.

So while most people are predicting a Chatsworth-El Camino Real championship game at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, the Tigers hope to crash the party.

San Fernando has a likely All-City player in junior William Vasquez, who’s batting above .500. The key for San Fernando will be how well the Tigers can play defense at USC. When ace David Lira is on the mound, he helps the defense by striking out batters. Jose Reyes, the No. 2 pitcher, is solid, but he needs the infielders to come through.

And of course, the biggest challenge for San Fernando is trying to defeat the reigning City player of the year, pitcher Jose Cardona. A year has passed, and it’s still all about finding a way to beat Cardona to get to Dodger Stadium.
