Orange County Superior Court Judge Gregory H. Lewis has set Oct. 3 as the trial date for the lawsuit filed by the Roman Catholic diocese of Orange County, representing Santa Ana Mater Dei, against the CIF Southern Section.

A case-management conference was held Monday. Attorneys for both sides are still engaged in the discovery process.

With Rob Wigod set to take over as the Southern Section’s new commissioner on Aug. 2, there still could be a settlement before the trial. And the Southern Section will likely seek a summary judgment.

Mater Dei has accused the Southern Section of acting in a ‘discriminatory manner’ in how rules are enforced and applied toward its student athletes.
