Baseball: Van Nuys hanging tough in Valley Mission League

Van Nuys hasn’t been particularly competitive in the Valley Mission League in recent years, but the Wolves improved to 5-3 on Thursday with a 4-1 victory over Sylmar.

Vladimir Duran threw a complete game. Daniel Rios and Ricky MacFarlene each had two hits.

In the East Valley League, Arleta (14-7, 8-0) defeated Sun Valley Poly, 10-0, in five innings. Javy Lopez threw a one-hitter, striking out seven. Derek Maldonado had four RBIs. Lopez and Ivan Ceja each had three hits.

In the Don Lugo tournament, Burbank defeated Oxnard, 3-2, in 11 innings on a walk-off home run by Dylan Mersola.
