Baseball: Loyola upsets Lakewood

Lakewood, ranked No. 6 in Southern Section Division 1, was beaten by Los Angeles Loyola, 7-4, in the Redondo tournament on Saturday.

Tommy Bergjans gave up two hits in six innings. Chad Powers had two hits and two RBIs. Dan Swick added two hits, including an RBI double. Loyola is 12-13; Lakewood is 23-4-1.

Torrance won the Redondo tournament championship game with a 14-9 win over Bishop Amat in eight innings.

In the Trinity League, Mater Dei regained sole possession of first place with a 12-4 win over JSerra.

El Toro defeated Yorba Linda, 6-3, in 10 innings. Gavin Collins’ bases-loaded double in the 10th drove in two runs. Collins had three hits on the day.

Thousand Oaks defeated Encino Crespi, 10-4, and 7-6. Avondre Bollar, Daniel Delaney, Peter McAfee and Evan Quinn had two hits apiece in the first game. San Fernando defeated Sun Valley Poly, 17-7, in six innings. David Garcia went three for three. Jose Reyes had a home run and double. Van Nuys defeated Grant, 2-0, on a complete game by Andres Sepulveda.

Westlake Village Oaks Christian (19-5) defeated South Torrance, 9-1. Travis Radke (7-1) struck out seven in five innings. Cole Taylor had three hits, including a two-run home run.

Woodland Hills El Camino Real defeated Narbonne, 3-1. Chris Whitmer picked up a save. Oscar Tinjaca had a two-run double. Royal defeated Roosevelt, 4-1. Arleta defeated Reseda Cleveland, 3-2. Miguel Perez threw a complete game and had the game-winning RBI single for Arleta’s 11th consecutive win. Sylmar defeated Birmingham in nine innings, 3-1.
