Baseball: Palm Desert wins championship

Palm Desert (12-3) won the OC Nissan tournament championship on Wednesday night with a 5-4 victory over Irvine Woodbridge.

Kaz Halcovich allowed two runs in six innings and also hit a home run. Woodbridge scored three runs in the top of the seventh to give the Aztecs a scare. Brooks Kriske was named tournament MVP.

Newhall Hart scored one run in the sixth and nine in the seventh to wipe out a 3-0 deficit and defeat Irvine Beckman, 10-3, in the OC Nissan tournament. Kevin Bailey had two doubles in the seventh for the Indians.

In the championship game of the Coachella Valley tournament, Santa Clarita Golden Valley defeated Brawley, 7-4, in 10 innings. Sophomore Billy Fredrick hit a three-run home run in the top of the 10. Scott Barlow was named the tournament MVP.

In the Darryl Kile tournament, Lakeside upset Vista Murrieta, 4-3.

In Tennessee, Valencia defeated Briarcrest Christian, 8-3. Trey Williams hit a three-run home run and A.J. Balta also homered.

In the Golden League, Quartz Hill (13-3, 3-0) defeated Palmdale, 13-3. Daniel Pitts had a double, home run and two RBIs. Eric Baynton had two hits and two RBIs.

In the Marmonte League, Simi Valley defeated Newbury Park, 3-2. Cody Ramer homered for the Pioneers, who knocked off Newbury Park ace Danny Keller. Thousand Oaks defeated Calabasas, 5-4. Moorpark defeated Royal, 11-1. Sean Houlihan had a home run and three RBIs for Moorpark. Westlake defeated Agoura, 8-2. Collin Yelich and Kris Moore hit home runs.

In the Tri-Valley League, Westlake Village Oaks Christian defeated Malibu, 9-1. Mikey Gose, Trevor Gretzky and Blake McFadden had two hits each. Cole Taylor hit a home run.

In the Pacific League, Burbank defeated Hoover, 11-7.
