Baseball: West Ranch gets win over ECR, Cardona

In a well-played nonleague game at USC, Valencia West Ranch scored two runs off City Section player of the year Jose Cardona in the first inning and made the runs stand up in a 2-1 win over Woodland Hills El Camino Real on Monday.

A single by Dakota Hernandez, followed by consecutive doubles from Josh Heinz and JC Cloney provided the winning runs for West Ranch (3-3).

Steve Farnworth picked up the victory, pitching 6 2/3 innings while striking out five and giving up five hits. Ryan Keller got the save, getting Chris Whitmer to line out to center field with runners on second and third in the seventh. Right fielder Matt Blake made a couple of dazzling catches for the Wildcats.

Cardona allowed only two runners on base from the third inning on. Javier Rodriguez had an RBI single for the Conquistadores (4-5).

Woodland Hills Taft (4-2) banged out 13 hits to defeat Arleta and All-City pitcher Javy Lopez, 8-3. Jerry Barajas allowed five hits. Mike Colon hit a home run and Alex Sawleson had three hits.

Reseda Cleveland defeated Roosevelt, 11-0, in five innings. Josh Gomez threw a one-hitter. Max Spiegel hit a grand slam and finished with five RBIs.

Burbank received four hits from Paul Faries to defeat (Ariz.) Rincon, 13-2.
