Girls’ basketball: Mosqueda-Lewis is Gatorade player of the year

On Thursday morning, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewisof Santa Ana Mater Dei was officially informed that she had been selected the Gatorade national player of the year in girls’ basketball.

She is the first player from California to receive the award since Lisa Lesliewas honored 21 years ago out of Inglewood Morningside, and Leslie was scheduled to make a surprise visit on campus to present the trophy.

Mosqueda-Lewis led Mater Dei to the Southern Section Division 1AA championship and a spot in Saturday’s Southern California Division I regional final. She’s averaging 21.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game.

She has a 3.41 grade-point average and signed with Connecticut.
