Girls’ basketball: Mater Dei up 16-4 after first quarter

In a showdown between the two top teams in the nation, Santa Ana Mater Dei has jumped out to an early 16-4 lead over Brea Olinda in the Southern Section Division 1AA championship game at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Alexyz Vaioletema has six points and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis has five for the third-seeded Monarchs, who are shooting 35.0% from the field. Taylor Spears and Alexis Perry each scored a basket for top-seeded Brea Olinda.
