So far, Santa Ana Mater Dei has shown why it’s currently the top-ranked team in the country by ESPN.

After a sizzling start, the Monarchs cooled off a little in the second quarter but still have a comfortable 32-25 lead over Brea Olinda at halftime, thanks to Jordan Adams’ one-handed scoop shot just before the buzzer.

Alexyz Vaioletama and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis each have eight points to lead third-seeded Mater Dei, which led 16-4 after the first quarter.

Alexis Perry has nine points, four assists and two steals for undefeated Brea Olinda, which is ranked No. 2 in the nation by ESPN but is the No. 1 seed in the division.

The Wildcats are back in the game but will have to shore up their interior defense in the second half to prevent easy baskets.
