Girls’ basketball: Can Santa Monica spring an upset?

Introductions are over and it’s time to play some playoff basketball at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana.

The first game of tonight’s doubleheader is about to tip off. Top-seeded Mater Dei (30-1), ranked No. 1 in the nation, is taking on Santa Monica (23-9) in a girls’ Southern California Regional quarterfinal.

The Monarchs have already defeated Santa Monica twice this season, including a 57-37 win in the Southern Section Division 1AA semifinals on March 1.
