Boys’ basketball: Loyola pulls out win over Torrey Pines

A tip-in by Justin Childress at the buzzer gave Los Angeles Loyola a 55-53 victory over Torrey Pines in a first-round game of the Southern California Division I regionals at Loyola. The Cubs will face Santa Ana Mater Dei on Thursday. Mater Dei defeated Aliso Niguel, 66-46.

Woodland Hills Taft cruised to an 83-45 victory over Clovis West. Stephen Maxwell scored 17 points. Taft will host La Costa Canyon on Thursday.

Long Beach Poly defeated Palisades, 77-46, and will face Etiwanda in a quarterfinal game on Thursday. Etiwanda defeated Bullard, 69-49, with Byron Wesley and Tyler LaCour scoring 18 points apiece. Westchester defeated Capistrano Valley, 61-44. Corona Centennial defeated Redlands East Valley, 89-73.

In Division II, Cerritos Gahr got 19 points from Davon Potts to defeat L.A. University, 89-65. David Nwaba scored 26 points. University finished at 25-10, the most wins in school history. Santa Ana Foothill defeated Mission Viejo, 46-43.

In Division III, Chatsworth got 30 points from Derrick Hector and upset Palm Springs, 74-66. Encino Crespi defeated Fresno Hoover, 78-47. Matt Mounier, Reggie Coates, London Perrantes and Kenny Stenhouse all had 11 points. North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake struggled for three quarters against Los Angeles Garfield before prevailing, 74-58. Zena Edosomwan had 30 points for the Wolverines. Julian Sandoval scored 26 for Garfield, which trailed after three quarters, 51-48.

In Division V, North Hollywood Valley Torah defeated Econdido Calvin Christian, 58-50. Aaron Liberman scored 15 points and had 18 rebounds. Joseph Grundman added 19 points.
