Boys’ basketball: Can Loyola rise to the occasion?

The second game of tonight’s doubleheader is about to tip off at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana.

It’s the boys’ Southern California Regional quarterfinal between fourth-seeded Mater Dei (28-3) and Los Angeles Loyola (25-5).

Both teams like to get out and run. Loyola pulled out a dramatic 55-53 win over San Diego Torrey Pines in the first round. Freshman point guard Parker Cartwright will have to stay poised if the Cubs hope to spring the upset.

Tonight’s winner will play the Long Beach-Poly-Etiwanda winner in the semifinals Saturday.
