Chatsworth is considered the favorite to win the West Valley League when action begins next week, but I see some good signs for defending City Section Division I champion Woodland Hills El Camino Real (7-5).

No. 1 is that A.J. Silberman, the Conquistadores’ No. 2 pitcher, is 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA. El Camino Real doesn’t have to worry about its No. 1 pitcher, Jose Cardona. The development of Silberman is critical to ECR’s hopes of defending its City title.

Also important is that El Camino Real has an improving junior in Justin Russell, who leads the team in hitting with a .407 average. Russell is the son of former Canoga Park standout Ron Russell.
