Baseball: Rio Ruiz delivers home run for Bishop Amat

Facing Long Beach Wilson ace Chase DeJong, La Puente Bishop Amat third baseman Rio Ruiz found himself in an 0-and-2 count. He stayed patient, waited for his pitch and hit a three-run home run, and that was the difference in a 3-0 victory.

Thousand Oaks defeated Chatsworth, 5-2. Woodland Hills Taft defeated Carson, 11-1. Art Chavez threw a two-hitter. Alex Sawleson hit his fifth home run. Granada Hills Kennedy defeated Simi Valley, 2-1, behind Ryan Cruz, who threw a five-hitter.

Camarillo handed Newbury Park its first defeat, 9-1, despite four hits from Luke Eubank. Hunter Virant homered for Camarillo.

JSerra split a doubleheader with Riverside Poly, winning, 2-0, and losing, 5-4. Bobby Hearn and Mike Heenan combined a three-hit shutout. In the second game, R.J. Ybarra had an RBI double for Poly.

Corona Santiago swept Compton Centennial by scores of 9-1 and 18-1. Scott Stidham threw a no-hitter in the first game with nine strikeouts.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame split a doubleheader with Canyon Country Canyon, winning, 5-4, and losing, 7-4. Encino Crespi lost to Reseda Cleveland, 5-4, and beat the Cavaliers, 8-2. Jack Hartman of Cleveland threw six innings in the first game for the win.

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake defeated Artesia, 6-1. Kenny Grodin had two hits. Adam Ehrlich hit a grand slam in Campbell Hall’s 13-0 win over Hoover.
