All-City pitcher Ryan Cruz of Granada Hills Kennedy didn’t get to throw in last year’s first-round playoff game. He was held out with the idea of pitching in the second round. But the Golden Cougars were upset by Birmingham.

Cruz showed in his season debut on Tuesday how tough he can be. He threw a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks in Kennedy’s 2-0 victory over Sun Valley Poly. Andrew Pacleb homered in the first inning for Kennedy.

Reseda Cleveland defeated Sylmar, 9-7, in eight innings. G. Allen and Max Spiegel had two hits apiece. Jack Hartman struck out five in three innings of relief.

Harbor City Narbonne knocked off Arleta and All-City pitcher Javy Lopez, 5-3. Ricky Perez hit a home run for the Gauchos. San Pedro defeated Roosevelt, 11-3. Van Nuys defeated Wilson, 10-5. Freshman Jaime Alcala had two hits, as did Vladimir Duran and Daniel Ross.

Birmingham improved to 2-0 with a 12-0 victory over Marshall. Luke Jupp threw a five-inning no-hitter and was two for four at the plate. Jerry Zaragoza had a double, triple and three RBIs.
