Baseball: Moorpark’s Higginbotham throws no-hitter

It was a Marmonte League showdown on Friday between Westlake Village Westlake and Moorpark, and pitcher Matt Higginbotham was ready for his best. He threw a no-hitter, striking out 10 to lift Moorpark to a 2-0 victory over the Warriors. Moorpark is 6-1 and 2-0 in league.

Newbury Park (7-0, 2-0) remained unbeaten with a 9-6 Marmonte League win over Thousand Oaks. Matt Haskins hit a home run to lead a 10-hit attack. Simi Valley defeated Royal, 9-0. Cody Ramer had four hits and Nick Vigo three hits. Vigo also threw six shutout innings. Agoura defeated Calabasas, 5-2.

In the Foothill League, Garrett Gooding threw a one-hitter, striking out 12, as Newhall Hart defeated Golden Valley, 6-0. Saugus defeated West Ranch, 8-6. Valencia defeated Canyon, 12-2. A.J. Balta hit two home runs.

In the Trinity League, Orange Lutheran got five shutout innings from Brent Wheatley in a 13-0 win over Santa Margarita. Art Vidro had two RBIs and Conner Sullivan had two hits. Cole Irvin allowed three hits and struck out eight to help Anaheim Servite defeat JSerra, 2-0. It was JSerra’s first defeat.

In the Mission League, Loyola completed a two-game sweep of Encino Crespi with a 5-2 victory. Tommy Bergjans allowed two hits and struck out nine. West Hills Chaminade hung on for a 7-6 victory over Mission Hills Alemany. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated St. Francis, 9-5. Nick Huynh had a three-run triple.

Woodland Hills Taft (6-2) got a grand slam from Mike Hymes in a 14-2 win over Eagle Rock. The Toreadors have hit 14 home runs this season. Hymes finished with six RBIs.
