There’s one week left in the regular season for high school basketball, so coaches are going to try to get their teams healthy and start playoff preparation.

A little surprising is that some of the best teams all season are not playing at their best. Some teams get bored when league championships have already been won but coaches don’t want bad habits developed. There’s still more than a month left of games for teams that can put together a winning streak in the playoffs.

Some teams could be getting players back. Encino Crespi has been waiting patiently for point guard London Perrantes to return from a leg fracture. He’s expected back for the playoffs but won’t be available for Monday’s Mission League game against North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake.

There doesn’t need to be any panic among Long Beach Poly fans after the Jackrabbits lost for the first time on Saturday against Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. I was impressed afterward at the maturity of several players recognizing it was a learning experience. I’m still predicting a state title for the Jackrabbits.

But there’s going to be lots of competitive playoff games this season in the toughest division, 1AA, because it’s loaded with top teams.
