Max Fried is everyone’s best friend among coaches at Van Nuys Montclair Prep. He’s the standout junior pitcher for the baseball team and also the starting guard for the Mounties’ basketball team. He’s trying to do both sports simultaneously.

‘We’ve worked it out,’ baseball Coach Rick Weber said.

Of course, the schedule has to cooperate.

The baseball season begins next Friday for the Mounties, and Fried is penciled in to pitch against Maranatha.

But the Mounties could be still alive in the Division 5A basketball playoffs.

Fried is practicing basketball and baseball each day. Asked if pitching bullpen is affecting his free-throw shooting, Weber said, ‘Why would it screw up his free-throw shooting? It hasn’t.’
