Football: Southern Section Council approves playoff change

The Southern Section Council, made up of area leagues, approved a change in the number of guaranteed playoff berths for each league in football on Thursday, and that will allow more at-large berths for each division effective in 2012.

Leagues with four or five teams will now be guaranteed two playoff entries. Six- to eight-team leagues will get three entries. Leagues with nine or more teams will get four entries. No longer will teams need at least a .500 record to be considered for the playoffs.

Most notably, the Moore League will lose its four-team guarantee for the Pac-5 playoffs. And the 10-team Marmonte League will have only four teams guaranteed for the Northern Division playoffs.

I can't believe the CIF actually did something positive for football fans. Their habit of taking the path of least resistance is what got them most of the flak. No more Moore league teams wobbling in from 4th place unless they earn it.
