Suddenly, teams in Orange County are challenging Santa Ana Mater Dei and winning.

Orange Lutheran became the first team to beat the Monarchs in a Trinity League game since 2005 on Friday with a 59-56 victory.

That’s the same Orange Lutheran team that seemed to be under achieving earlier this season, with losses to Crespi, Loyola and West Ranch. Gabe York scored 24 points for the Lancers.

Mater Dei had come away with close victories over Anaheim Canyon and Bellflower St. John Bosco, providing a clear warning that the Monarchs (13-2) could be ripe for defeat.
