Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei avenges only league defeat

Santa Ana Mater Dei got its revenge Friday night for its only Trinity League defeat, blowing out Orange Lutheran, 84-61, before a packed crowd at Mater Dei. The Monarchs (20-2, 6-1) had lost to Orange Lutheran, 59-56, on Jan. 7.

This time, they opened a 32-13 lead and were never threatened. Xavier Johnson scored 23 points and Katin Reinhardt had 16. Gabe York and James Douglas had 14 points each for Lutheran.

In the Mission League, Los Angeles Loyola set up a Saturday showdown with unbeaten Etiwanda by knocking off West Hills Chaminade, 82-61, despite 32 points from sophomore Jaron Martin. Joe Stein, returning from a two-game suspension, had 18 points for the Cubs. Etiwanda (22-0) defeated Rancho Cucamonga, 66-37. Loyola and Etiwanda meet in the Fairfax State Preview Classic at 8:30 p.m.

Encino Crespi held off Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 52-49. Matt Mounier had 19 points and Reggie Coates added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Jonathan Bell scored 15 points for Notre Dame.

In the Coliseum League, Darnell Taylor scored 24 points and Isaac Hamilton 21 as Crenshaw improved to 6-0 in the Coliseum League with an 81-48 win over View Park.

In the West Valley League, Kevin Johnson had 18 points in Taft’s 81-34 win over Birmingham. Temjae Singleton scored 25 points in El Camino Real’s 69-56 win over Chatsworth.

In the Marmonte League, Thousand Oaks defeated Westlake, 68-54. In the Alph League, Austin McBroom had 29 points in Campbell Hall’s 85-55 win over Brentwood.
