Coming off an emotional loss to Harvard-Westlake, Los Angeles Loyola came back Saturday night to defeat City Section Division I power Los Angeles Washington, 61-56, in the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Basketball Classic. It was a good sign for the Cubs, who I still think are going to win a Southern Section Division 1A championship. Joe Stein had 21 points and Julian Harrell 18.

In a big game coming up, Loyola will face unbeaten Etiwanda at 8 p.m. on Jan. 29 in the Fairfax State Preview Classic at Fairfax. Loyola lost to Etiwanda earlier this season but was competitive.

Reseda Cleveland came up with a 51-48 win over Upland. Cleveland is getting better, which could make it second place to Taft in the West Valley League. Summit defeated L.A. Windward, 77-61. And L.A. Price defeated Gardena Serra, 61-48.

Price has a showdown game against La Verne Lutheran on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the University of La Verne as part of a one-day showcase put on by La Verne Lutheran.
