Boys' basketball: Dragovic fails to gain eligibility
Danilo Dragovic, a 6-foot-5 senior who's the younger brother of former UCLA basketball player Nikola Dragovic, failed to convince a judge on Tuesday to grant him basketball eligibility this season after transferring to North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ann I. Jones said despite "impassioned" pleas from Dragovic's attorney, the "rules are clear," and she refused to overturn a decision by the CIF denying Dragovic varsity eligibility after he played junior varsity last season following his move from Serbia.
Because of the visa Dragovic obtained, he could attend a public school for only one year. He did not know that if he played JVs, he would be ineligible the following year playing varsity. The CIF has allowed him to participate in varsity track at Harvard-Westlake this spring because it does not create an "unfair advantage."
His host parent in Los Angeles, Judith Angel, criticized the CIF for failing to give Dragovic a hardship waiver of its transfer rules, saying, "They really need to change."
