In an unprecedented move, the CIF has told Los Angeles Fairfax not to play junior guard Brendyn Taylor just weeks after a three-person CIF appeals panel approved a hardship waiver.

Taylor has played in seven games since he gained eligibility after transferring from View Park Prep, but on Tuesday, the CIF informed Fairfax that it wanted to review the decision of the appeals panel, forcing Taylor to miss games on Wednesday against Venice and Thursday against Westchester.

His family has an attorney working to learn the reason for the CIF intervention. Usually, after an appeals panel has made a decision, the case ends. But if the panel misapplied a rule, the CIF could review it -- though it raises questions of the entire appeals process that has drawn criticism from coaches and parents.

If the CIF can intervene on a positive decision, can parents seek CIF intervention when a hardship waiver is denied?

Taylor’s father, Brian, said, ‘It’s a travesty.’
