Always count on Newhall Hart to produce a baseball standout every couple of years. From Chris Valaika to Matt Valaika, from Mike Montgomery to Trevor Bauer, the Indians have a track record of turning out top players.

And word is spreading about Hart’s next big-time player. His name is Luke Persico, a sophomore who was an outfielder as a freshman on varsity and is moving to shortstop this season.

‘He can run,’ Coach Jim Ozella said.

He also can hit, throw and play defense. But most impressively, he’s a scoring machine when he’s on the bases. At 6 feet 2, he could be used in a variety of ways for the Indians over the next three seasons.

And Ozella can’t wait to turn him loose.
