Boys’ basketball: LB Poly, Taft, Mater Dei win titles

No. 1 Long Beach Poly, No. 2 Woodland Hills Taft and No. 3 Santa Ana Mater Dei each won tournament championships Saturday.

Poly defeated Compton, 63-47, in the Redondo tourney final. MVP Ryan Andeson scored 23 points. In another Redondo game, Harvard-Westlake defeated Bakersfield, 53-52.

Taft defeated Westchester, 71-60, in the Westchester final. MVP Spencer Dinwiddie had 18 points. Alemany defeated St. Bernard, 73-57, behind Max Guercy’s 17 points.

Mater Dei defeated Anaheim Canyon, 73-64, in the Loara tournament final. Xavier Johnson, the junior transfer from Chaparral, made 15 of 27 shots and finished with 40 points.

Etiwanda won the Pasadena tournament with a 68-64 victory over Corona Centennial. MVP Byron Wesley had 17 points.

Simi Valley defeated Valencia, 61-57, in the Simi Valley final. MVP Jonathan Davis scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds. Lonnie Jackson was held to 13 points.

In the Campbell Hall tournament final, MVP Austin McBroom scored 21 points in the Vikings’ 66-53 win over L.A. University.

In the Burbank tournament, MVP Jonathan Bell had 20 points to help Sherman Oaks Notre Dame beat Agoura, 73-56, to win the title.

In the Cerritos/Gahr final, Gahr defeated St. John Bosco, 71-67, despite 30 points from Cezar Guerrero. MVP Davon Potts scored 18 points.

In a nonleague game, Zack Gardea scored 31 points to help St. Francis (1-0) defeat Muir, 65-51. Justin Knowles had 20 points for Muir (1-1). Encino Crespi defeated Oak Park, 77-38.
