Girls’ basketball: Cajon upsets Edison in Ayala Best of the West semifinal

Cajon, ranked No. 11 in the Southland by The Times, upset No. 5 Edison, 62-60, in an Ayala Best of the West semifinal on Thursday.

After trailing 37-24 at halftime, Christina Marquette made five three-pointers to bring the Chargers to within two points with seven seconds remaining.

Karlie Samuelson tried to tie the game with a baseline jumper from the corner with a second left, but a whistle was called on the play and the referees said there was an offensive foul.

Jazzmeen Williams led Cajon (15-0) with 12 points and Angelica Guardado had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Bonnie Samuelson had 20 points for Edison (11-1).

‘Unfortunately we won’t see them again,’ Edison Coach Dan Wiley said. ‘I’d really like to see them again.’

In the other semifinal, Jada Blackwell scored 21 points to help No 8 Etiwanda defeat Bishop Amat, 70-33. Leeah Powell led the Lancers with 10 points.

Etiwanda and Cajon will play in the championship tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Ayala High.
