Dino Andrie, who guided San Pedro’s Mary Star of the Sea to six league championships and two Southern Section semifinal appearances in 15 years as head coach, has announced his retirement.

The Stars reached section semifinal games in 1994 and 2001 under Andrie, who compiled an 85-78-2 record while coaching the team in two stints from 1994-96 and 1999-2010. He spent a total of 26 years as a coach at the school, with Mary Star finishing 4-7 this season after a 28-0 loss to Morro Bay in the first round of the Northwest Division playoffs.

A 1979 graduate of Mary Star who set the school’s single-game rushing record when he gained 315 yards in 1978, Andrie returned to his alma mater as a junior varsity assistant upon graduation. He was promoted to a varsity assistant in 1983 and then hired as the varsity head coach 11 years later.

‘Over the years, his greatest achievement was his ability to to help mold boys into responsible young men,’ Mary Star Principal Rita Dever said in a statement. ‘He is such a great family man and does so much for our school. He truly is a great example for his players, coaches, alumni and colleagues.’

One tradition Andrie continued, even after Mary Star moved to a new campus in 2007, was guiding his team from the old 8th Street campus in San Pedro through the alleys to Daniels Field on 12th Street during homecoming games.
