Boys’ basketball: Santa Ana Foothill improves to 6-0

Cooper Pickell, a 6-foot-5 senior, scored 15 points to help Santa Ana Foothill (6-0) defeat Huntington Beach Ocean, 66-48, on Wednesday in the Ocean View tournament.

Clovis East, led by Kevin Bailey’s 26 points, knocked off previously unbeaten Encino Crespi, 75-69. Matt Mounier led Crespi (3-1) with 24 points and 17 rebounds. El Toro defeated Clovis West, 71-63. Los Angeles Loyola rallied from a 22-point second-half deficit to defeat Orange Lutheran, 76-71. Joe Stein scored 27 points and Julian Harrell 24.

In the Santa Monica tournament, UCLA-bound Norman Powell put on a show for San Diego Lincoln, scoring 30 points in an 82-60 victory over previously unbeaten Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. ‘He’s the best I’ve seen this year,’ Notre Dame Coach Bill Bedgood said.

Kennedy Edwards had 21 points for the Knights (4-1). Lincoln will face L.A. Windward in a 6:30 p.m. quarterfinal game on Thursday. Windward defeated Crenshaw, 72-54. Wesley Saunders had 25 points and 15 rebounds for Windward. Crenshaw (2-4) lost its fourth consecutive game.

In the Moorpark tournament, West Hills Chaminade improved to 2-0 with an 85-40 win over Santa Clara. Gilles Dierickx had 22 points and 11 rebounds. Jaron Martin added 19 points and seven assists.

Oaks Christian, still missing its football players who play basketball, was beaten by Newhall Hart, 63-57, despite 26 points from Chass Bryan.

Freshman Maleke Haynes made two free throws with 10 seconds left in El Camino Real’s 53-50 win over Leuzinger in the Beverly Hills tournament. Anthony Jones led the Conquistadores (2-0) with 17 points.

In the L.A. University tournament, West Adams defeated North Hollywood, 59-55. Venice defeated Reseda, 70-67. University defeated Dantzler Charter, 81-37.

North Hollywood Campbell Hall defeated L.A. Cathedral, 106-64. Austin McBroom had 24 points, K.J. Smith 20 and Cole Huff 19.
