Junior guard Michael Avery of Encino Crespi will have to sit out this season after losing his CIF appeal, his father, Howard, confirmed.

Avery played for the Celts as a freshman, then transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida as a sophomore. He returned this year and sought a hardship waiver to gain immediate eligibility with Crespi but it was denied by the Southern Section.

It has been a tough learning experience for Avery, who gained national attention in 2008 when he committed to Kentucky as an eighth-grader. But he has grown up, become a better player and should be able to use the year to improve even more.

But there’s no denying not being able to play with your high school team will be a challenge.
