Football: Jeff Engilman isn't going out quietly

Jeff Engilman has never been low key. In winning City Section championships at Manual Arts, Sylmar and Arleta, the man has been always intense.

As Fred Grimes, a long-time Engilman assistant, once said, "There are certain things that happen. The sun goes up. The sun goes down, and Engilman yells."

This is supposed to be Engilman's final season of coaching, and his Arleta players are trying to deliver a City title.

Arleta plays Fairfax on Friday in a City Division II semifinal at Monroe.

Dan Kelley, who has coached with Engilman for 16 years and should be a leading candidate to replace him, said the seniors are determined to make their final season and Engilman's last season a memorable one.

As for how he has been able to coach for so long with Engilman, Kelley said, "I think what helps is I played for him."

As for rumors Engilman has mellowed, Kelley said, "I really don't think he's calmed down. He only knows one speed."

dear fax alum,

get all your information straight before you run your mouth, even though arleta has a good football team they still do NOT have lights so until youre a higher seed, please dont judge where they hold their playoff games.

CityFan

Just wondering if Arleta and Chatsworth both win, do they still have to travel to East LA or can they move the gamt to Valley College. Its a lot closer and just as nice, if not nicer

arleta has had problems stoping the run all year so this will be the key to there championship hopes

Hey Zeus

Arleta has no lights - hence, no night time playoff games. Monroe has been the de facto home stadium for Arleta for playoff games. No way should the venue be changed to the home site of a lower-ranked team.

Optimus Prime

Fax Alum,
I've been to both sites (on the field). They are comparable. Neither is that great. Neither is horrible. Arleta is higher seed and gets to pick. They have been having their playoff games there for years.
I think as we get excited to see these games (I'm not almuni like you, but still get jacked up for playoffs here in the Valley) we want the venue to fit the awesomeness of the situation.
I'm sorry I'll miss a great game.

fax alum

why is the game being played at a neutral site.if arleta cant hold the fans then why not play the game at fairfax.monroe is a horrible site for a playoff game

Hey Zeus

I sincerely hope that Engilman gets bored in retirement and comes back to coach somewhere in 2012. City Section needs quality head coaches like him.

Haha

Jeff will go home empty handed!
Wait.. Full handed after fax hands them their ass!!
(:
