The City Section Division I semifinals on Friday matching Carson and Woodland Hills Taft and Crenshaw and Venice should be fun.

Top-seeded Carson trailed Garfield, 6-3, at halftime, but Coach Elijah Asante was pleased his team got a tough game and responded for a 29-13 victory.

‘Garfield is tough,’ Asante said. ‘They don’t lay down and die for anybody. They were prepared. Look at the teams they played.’

Now comes Taft, which has made steady improvement all season and has the No. 1 passing quarterback in Michael Bercovici.

‘Bercovici is nice,’ Asante said. ‘That dude is one of the best quarterbacks I’ve seen. We’re going to have to get to him.’

In the other semifinal, Venice has top skill-position players but the Gondoliers are going to have to try to hold their own on the offensive and defensive lines to be in position to upset defending champion Crenshaw. And there’s always De’Anthony Thomas to deal with.

In City Division II, Western League teams Fairfax and Palisades could be headed for a championship game. Palisades must get past Chatsworth and Fairfax faces Arleta, which is trying to send out retiring Coach Jeff Engilman with a championship.
