West Hills Chaminade is the big winner in the Southern Section football playoffs. In only its second year under former Birmingham Coach Ed Croson, the Eagles are 11-1 and in the semifinals of the Western Division playoffs.

Last week against Atascadero, they played 12 sophomores and three freshmen at times. Their starting offensive line has no seniors. Against Culver City, they used six freshmen and at least 20 sophomores.

If they get past Arroyo Grande on Saturday, they’ll probably get a rematch in the championship game against Gardena Serra, a team they gave a big scare to earlier this season.

So win or lose, Croson has the Eagles flying high, and in 2011, Chaminade should be a top 10 team in Southern California.

Croson is already improving his nonleague schedule, trying to set up a game with Valencia, to go along with games against Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, Venice and a possible game against an Orange County powerhouse.
