Palisades, a disappointing team last season, got an exciting 52-51 season-opening victory over Long Beach Jordan in the first round of the Redondo tournament Monday.

Palisades, trailing, 51-50, called a timeout with 20 seconds left. The Dolphins worked the ball around and found 6-foot-4 Ilya Ilyayev in the low post. He got the ball and made a short turnaround shot that dropped in with seven seconds left. Ilyayev, who played junior varsity last season, finished with 16 points.

It was a nice win for a Palisades team that was without its starting point guard, Malcolm Creer, who’s the standout running back for the football team that is in the City Section Division II semifinals.

Anthony January scored 33 points in Compton’s 88-48 win over Gardena.
