Keith Smith scored 29 points, and Compton Centennial survived a 22-1 drought between the second and third quarters to defeat No. 15 Santa Monica, 59-56, in a first-round game of the Redondo tournament.

Santa Monica trailed, 27-14, when it put together its streak that propelled it to an eight-point lead. But Centennial rallied behind Smith, a 6-foot senior guard. His three-point play with 56 seconds left gave Centennial a 57-53 lead.

Santa Monica’s Holden Foshag just missed making a three-pointer at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime. He had 16 points and Jordan Mathews 15 for Santa Monica.
