Even after Harry Welch won state bowl championships at Canyon Country Canyon and San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s, there were people who wondered if taking the coaching job this season at Santa Margarita might be too big a challenge.

Welch is proving how good a coach he is, and the Santa Margarita rebuilding program looks ahead of schedule after the Eagles’ latest victory on Saturday, a 31-7 thumping of No. 14-ranked Los Alamitos.

With Adam Young’s passing and running, Santa Margarita is 4-1 and looking every bit like a team that can be competitive in the Trinity League.

Welch, though, has a big day ahead. He’s scheduled to have surgery for prostate cancer. Knowing Welch, he might not even miss a game.
